We’re being constantly told that Spring is here, the daffodils are in bloom, the trees are greening up but then just as we start to get excited that better weather is on the way another beast from the east threatens us…. so this year I am not taking my chances just yet in planting anything outside, but that’s not to say I’m not getting ready for it, this Easter weekend I will be potting some of our laced garden pinks into 4″ pots to grow on, get them more established – then when the weather finally improves I will be able to plant them outside in the border, safe in the knowledge they will thrive and this is the same treatment we advise when we post our plug plants out to people.
As a mail order company we have been growing and posting plants for a long time… well the company itself started posting plants back in 1912, here is an excerpt from our 1927 catalogue…
But we ourselves have been doing it since 1994, so we have amassed quite a knowledge on how to send plants, what they like, dislike – that isn’t to make us sound big headed, I’m more trying to say we know what we are doing and have been doing it successfully, heck with over 20 years experience in growing and posting plants, we must be doing something right!!
But this season, growing has been a tricky one, we have had such awful light levels, with plenty of dull grey, wet days and some bitterly cold temperatures too – both day and nights with -10c recorded on the thermometer one night at the beginning of March! And then don’t forget the snow… and we live in the South! this is supposed to be the warm part of the country (hehe) but I know compared to some parts we have had it easy – and when it comes to our range of plants this type of weather keeps us on our toes and makes for sleepless nights – there is nothing more to keep you awake in the dead of night than to worry that if the heater packs up at -4c you will have lose everything… and I do mean EVERYTHING!! For example Pelargoniums are temperature sensitive and have to be kept frost free, out of our 600+ named varieties that we stock, alot of them, we are the only company who has them – they are not found anywhere else so if we lost them, they would be gone…. forever!! – sobering thought for sure!!
Despite all that, we have carried on regardless, and kept on propagating, through all the cold miserable weather we haven’t stopped taking cuttings, nurturing and tending to the young plants and are now, in these almost balmy spring days (they are balmy compared to some of the days we’ve had recently!!) we reap the rewards of the turmoil mother nature has thrown at us and we now have a greenhouse bursting with beautiful young plants ready to go to their new homes and be planted up to grow on.
