Perpetual Flowering Carnations
Perpetual Flowering Carnations are the type you buy in the local shops as a cut flower so why not try growing your own. All are greenhouse perennial and usually grown in a greenhouse, although they will be just as happy in a polytunnel or conservatory. They can be grown outside for the summer just remember to bring them back inside for the winter, as they are generally not winter hardy in the garden as they don't like to be too wet and cold at the same time. If grown outside during the summer it is advisable to bring them back into a greenhouse or conservatory end September / October and keep over the winter inside. If they are kept at 7C they will flower in winter as well as during the summer, though not as prolifically due to the poorer light levels but it is possible to winter blooms.
We suggest growing 3 in a 5ltr pot, this makes it easier to move around and also to monitor watering & feeding. For impact planting why not put 3 of the same variety in a pot!! These varieties are not really grown for scent more for the flower production scented varieties these tend to be the more older types, like Malmaisons & Old Greenhouse. The older varieties can be a little more temperamental and flower less frequently - but that's not to say they are not worth the space in the greenhouse!!
